Hello All,

Would someone please explain to me what the purpose
of tnsnames file does?
Does it need to be on the client workstation and what should be it's correct location?

I am new to Oracle, hence the beginner question!

Thanks

ALWAYS
Post Operating System (OS) name & version for DB server system.
Post results of
SELECT * from v$version

It would be helpful if you followed Posting Guidelines - http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/88153/0/

TNSNAMES.ORA is the functional equivalent to OS "hosts" file.
Remote DBs are referenced by TNS_ALIAS (leftmost field).
This file contains all necessary details to access remote DB

ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
