I have been charged with getting information on Oracle running on OS/390.
We have Oracle currently on AIX and NT machines and
would like to get information, and if possible some contacts
of people who are running Oracle on OS/390.

Information items of interest are:

1) How does it perform?
2) What type of impact did you see on your S390 box?
3) Manageability?
4) How does it compare in performance to the AIX and
NT flavors?

Thanks,
Pete Vander Woude

This depends on the application and the size of the mainframe. A tuned application on a properly sized mainfame will perform quite adequately.

: 2) What type of impact did you see on your S390 box?
If there is work to be done, Oracle will take as much CPU as it can to get the work done. If you already have a busy system, there will be contention for cpu.

: 3) Manageability?

I don't believe Oracle is any harder to manage on the mainframe than any other platform.

: 4) How does it compare in performance to the AIX and
: NT flavors?

There are no comparisons that I know of. Comparing MIPS to megaherz just doesn't seem to work well.

: Thanks,

Hello Pete,
In our company, in Brazil, we've been trying to do that and we deeply regret the experience.
We are trying to move an application GL from a Solaris to a 390 2.7.
For months and months we're working on that and we are well deceptioned.
Even with the support of the Oracle local branch.
Processes take 11 days and people from Oracle tell us to activate trace.
We asked them to review the code but it seems they are not used to do so.
The only answer is Start tracing...
Sometimes the trace area blows and the trace causes a shortage on WTO buffers on the system console, and the system as a whole agonizes.
Really we do not recommend.
Yours sincerely,
Roberto.
