Oracle Installation, Configuration, Troubleshooting and Scripting on Linux Platforms (RedHat, SuSE, Ubunto, Mandrake, TurboLinux, etc.)

I've just noticed something suspicious, so - as Google is my friend - went to see what it thinks about it. Google said
Quote:
Did you mean: linux ubuntu

So, which one is it? I'd say it is Ubuntu, not Ubunto. If I'm not wrong, could it be fixed in the Linux Forum description, please?

Yes, please, do so before midnight or else Ubunto might turn into a Pumpkin Smile

Thank you!

Now, that not the spirit of ubunto!

"In Africa, the Zulu have a word, ubunto, which is often translated to mean community, but I've heard a more accurate definition: ' I am because we are; we are because I am.' In other words, happiness is not a solitary endeavor; it's a joint enterprise, something that can only be created by the whole. I am happy because we are happy. Contentment arises from a sense of family, community and connectedness."

I didn't know that; thank you for sharing!

However, it wasn't "Ubuntu" that reminded me of Cinderella, but late hours and the urge to quickly fix a typo.

OK, off to bed (before I turn into a mouse). Good night!

Although it has nothing to do with the original question, I thought that such type of a question might fit in here.

I've noticed that Siebel spans two OraFAQ Forums; could it be fixed (i.e. removed from "Other Application Suites" description)?

A quick Google search didn't find anything about "Perl::DBI". Even on the homepage, it is referred to as "Perl DBI". So, what is the meaning of two consecutive colon signs in Open Databases Interfaces forum description?

Quote:

Open Database Interfaces
Open Database programming interfaces like PHP, Perl::DBI, Python, Ruby, ODBC, JDBC and SQLJ.

Windows & DOS

It seems that XP is missing (and we might also consider a possible rearrangement, such as 9x / NT / 2000 / XP / Vista).

Also, is "DOS" necessary here? The last DOS version was ... 6.0 or something like that; since Microsoft introduced Windows 95, there's no DOS as it used to be. I'm not sure whether there was an Oracle version for DOS (and don't feel like searching for it right now), but even if it was - does it still work somewhere? I don't remember anyone asking a pure DOS question here. OK, there are problems with batch scripts etc., but I think DOS is just a surplus in forum's name.

Yes, I worked on it from version 4 to version 6 (I think I still have the (40+) floppy disks for this one somewhere).
But there was never a server version for Windows 9x (only client).
There are some DOS specific issues with scripts. For instance because of different character sets (code pages) used in DOS and Windows.
Windows 2003 server is missing if we want to be exhaustive.

Michel

A tiny grammatical error:
Quote:

should read "...discussions that don't belong in any other forum."

Red coloured members should have one "s" removed [10 member(s)]

Blue should look like "member(s)" [1 invisible member(s)].

Green guests are OK.

Also, would it be possible to see one administrator in my lifetime? You know, make an announcement like "Administrator will be online on Wednesday, 5th of March 2008, from 8:30 till 8:35 CET". I've never seen any (does it mean that administrators are like Nessie?).

Actually, I imagine administrators to be something like SYS; don't (ab)use them! So, I don't really expect my wishes to come true, but ... who knows?

Just being curious: sometimes number of allowed files per messages is 1, but in vast majority it is 100. What's the algorithm that decides when to allow 1 and when to allow 100 of them? Not that I ever needed more than one, but ...

/forum/fa/4066/0/

Also, regarding "unrestricted file extensions": when do you plan to restrict them to the ones listed on File extensions wiki pages?

It's a configuration setting - different forums can have different values. So, I guess the inconsistent configuration is my fault.

Not sure. I will reply to the original thread when done.

It's me, again ...

Under the "Windows" description we have Quote:
Oracle on Windows (DOS/ 9x / NT / XP / 2000 / 2003 / Vista) Installation, Configuration and Troubleshooting - including ODP.NET, VB, ASP, DAC, ODBC, OO4O and OLE DB issues.

The list seems to be non-exhaustive (where is Windows 2008 or windows 7, for example) so - how about removing all those version names and having onlyQuote:
Oracle on Microsoft Windows - Installation, Configuration and Troubleshooting (including ODP.NET, VB, ASP, DAC, ODBC, OO4O and OLE DB issues).

Moreover, as I can't even spell all those ODP, DAC, ODBC, ..., perhaps they might alose be normalized. I believe some of you must know what all of those mean, whether the list is final, should be enriched or ... whatever.

One more objection: Test forum description saysQuote:
Use this forum to post practice/ experimental messages before posting to the other forums.
There's either one space missing or one space too much in "practice/ experimental". Although I've been taught that slash shouldn't be surrounded with blanks, I prefer it because it makes the whole sentence more readable. Therefore, I'd put it asQuote:
practice / experimental
and notQuote:
practice/experimental

I'd like to ask whether it would be a good idea to do something with the name and/or description of our "Application Server" forum. Its description says:

Quote:

Oracle Internet/Web Application Server (iAS) and other Internet related questions (including mod_plsql, etc)

Although my working environment is still iAS, newer Oracle versions talk about "WebLogic Server". So, could you, Frank, either rename that forum to, for example, "Application Server / WebLogic Server" or modify its description so that people wouldn't post WebLogic Server related questions in Forms forum (as I've seen them doing so)?

Changed from:
Quote:

Oracle Internet/Web Application Server (iAS) and other Internet related questions (including mod_plsql, etc)

to ...
Quote:
Weblogic & Application Server
Weblogic Server, Oracle Internet Application Server (iAS) and other web server technologies.

I hope it makes sense.
