I need to clone 8i oracle software from one filesystem to another on same m/c ,if i just copy it and do the relink ,does it work?does orainventory knows about this new OH or do i need to let it know about it if so ,how can i do that?What other things i need to take care?Please any advise would be great.

yes, you don't have to relink if you have the same OS and version otherwise I recommend to not do this.

No. orainventory only knows what is installed via OUI or opatch.

You can't.

Does Oracle 8.1.7 works on HPUX11.1?
Yes it does we have a production 8174 db on hpux 11.1 ,which we are going to migarte to 10gR2 soon.

Look for files /etc/*ora* in HPUX (/var/opt/oracle is in Solaris).
